Matt Cutts: What should I do if I don’t know why I’m penalized?

We have a question from Alessi in Los Angeles California, she asks:
If it appears that your site has been penalized in SERP position, but you’ve done nothing wrong and cannot diagnose what the problem is, how do you proceed? Do you file reconsideration without being able to say what was wrong and what was fixed?
Well, you can file a reconsideration it doesn’t a reconsideration request and it doesn’t hurt to do that.

But I’d recommend trying to few basics first you know make sure that your site isn’t hacked, view the source on your page, look for things like hidden text sometimes even though you didn’t do anything wrong,if you haven’t catcher kept your website up to date or your webserver patched, people can get in and that’s a common reason why site might drop in rankings.
If you’ve tried all those for the basic things, I would also consider stopping by the Google Webmaster Help Forums, so that’s google.com/webmasters and then you can find the link their.

Because there’s a lot of expert people in there including what we call for a bionic posters who are really really, you know capable people and they know what they’re doing plus Googlers hang out in that form as well.
So if you post there often they’ll be able to give you some good suggestions about what might be potential issues as well.

Quick Answer: Make sure site isn’t hacked. Go to Google Webmaster Help Forums, file reconsideration request
